A massive earthquake hit Delhi-NCR on Monday morning at around 5.36 am. People were seen coming out of their houses following the earthquake. It is said to be one of the strongest earthquakes felt in Delhi-NCR in last few years.

When and what?

The earthquake was of magnitude 4.0 , as reported by the National Center for Seismology. The seismic event was recorded at a latitude of 28.59°N and a longitude of 77.16°E, with a shallow depth of 5 kilometres beneath the surface. Unlike earlier earthquakes, this one had its epicenter within Delhi itself and originated just 5 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface. Shallow earthquakes, typically occurring at depths of five to ten kilometres, tend to be more destructive compared to those that originate much deeper underground.

The tremors are also said to have felt in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Haryana.

How did people react?

As tremors shook the National Capital Region in the early hours, several political leaders from Delhi took to X to acknowledge the earthquake. BJP leader Tajinder Bagga posted, “Earthquake?”, while Congress leader Alka Lamba shared a similar reaction.

Several people took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to the earthquake.

Earlier in January, a massive eathquuake had hit Tibet after which strong tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR and many other Indian states.

What happened in Tibet in January?

On January 7, 2025, at 09:05 CST (UTC+8), a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of Mw 7.1 struck Tingri County in Tibet. The disaster claimed between 126 and 400 lives and left 338 people injured in the affected region. Additionally, 13 individuals in Nepal sustained injuries, while Northern India experienced minor damage. The tremors were felt widely across South Asia. This earthquake was the most significant to hit China since the Maduo earthquake in May 2021 and the deadliest since the Jishishan earthquake in December 2023. It was triggered by normal faulting and originated within the continental crust at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi).
