IPL 2025 will begin on March 22. A lot of new rules have been introduced for the mega T20 tournament. Let’s delve into the details one rule at a time.

1. Saliva Ban Uplifted in IPL 2025

Fast bowler Mohammad Shami, who will represent SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2025 edition of IPL, had called for ban on saliva to be lifted for bowlers. He had stated that fast bowlers find it tough to reverse swing the ball. The BCCI seems to have accepted Shami and several other bowlers’ request. IPL 2025 will see the return of bowlers being able to use saliva to shine the ball. Beware batters! Chasing the 300-run dream won’t be easy. ICC had banned cricketers from using saliva to shine the ball during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2. Hawk Eye tech to decide wides in IPL 2025

Hawk Eye technology will be used to decide wide balls in IPL 2025. Wide balls outside the off stump and over the head of the batters will be adjudicated through the technology. For the outside-off-stump wide balls, the Hawk Eye technology will mesure the movement of the batter and adjudicate the wides accordingly.

3. IPL 2025 captains won’t be banned anymore for over-rate offences

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya has been banned from the first IPL 2025 match his team plays because his team maintained slow over-rate in their last match of IPL 2024, which was their third offence of the season. Well, now the rule has been changed and henceforth, a captain won’t get a one-match suspension after three over-rate offences in a season. Such offences will now only lead to a fine and in-game field restrictions. Well, does that mean Hardik can lead in the first match? No, because last year’s imposed suspensions will remain.

4. Second ball rule

The second ball rule has been introduced to counter the threat of dew in the second innings of the night matches. This specific rule will be employed only in the IPL matches that begin at 7.30 pm. Upon the discretion of the umpires, the ball would be a changed and a new ball will be used after the 11th over of the second innings.

5. New Code of Conduct

Starting from the IPL 2025 season, a new Code of Conduct will come into effect. It will include a demerit points system along with suspension points that will stay valid for 36 months.

6. Expansion of DRS Scope

Other than the wides, the DRS has been expanded to include height-based no-ball reviews. The updated system will utilize Hawk-Eye technology and ball-tracking to assist umpires in making accurate and consistent decisions.

7. Players banned from wearing sleeveless jersey during post-match presentation

The BCCI has prohibited players from wearing floppy hats and sleeveless jerseys during IPL post-match presentations. According to the new guidelines, a first violation will result in a warning, while a second offence will attract a monetary fine.

8. Super Over Timing Rule

Multiple Super Overs can be played to determine a winner, as long as they are completed within one hour of the main match ending. The first Super Over must begin within 10 minutes of the match’s conclusion. If it ends in a tie, the next Super Over must commence within five minutes of the previous one finishing.

9. Two-year ban for overseas players pulling out

Well, this is not a new new rule, but its implementation is related to IPL 2025. Foreign players who pulled out before the start of the season despite being bought by a franchise in the IPL 2025 mega auction will be suspended for two years. Harry Brook has been banned by the BCCI for two years. Brook was bought by DC at the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, he pulled out just before the season.

10. Golden badge

Well, this is a fun addition to honour the defending champions of IPL. From IPL 2025 onwards, the defending champions will be wearing the golden IPL badge on their jersey.
