India defeated Pakistan by six wickets in their Champions Trophy 2025 Group A match in Dubai on Sunday. India have now won two matches in the tournament, while Pakistan have suffered two defeats. The win has consolidated India’s chances of advancing to the semi-finals, while Pakistan are now in a tough spot.
1. The Toss Loss

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in the match. Team India captain Rohit Sharma lost the toss for the 12th time in a row in ODI cricket. India have set an unwanted record for losing the toss for the most times in a row in the 50-over international format.

2. The Never Ending Shami Over

Team India fast bowler Mohammad Shami bowled as many as five wides in the first over of Pakistan’s innings. A total of 11 deliveries were bowled by Shami, however, Pakistan couldn’t capitalised on the wayward over and could manage just six runs from the 11-ball over. It was the longest over bowled by an Indian in the history of Champions Trophy. Shami is the first Indian bowler to bowl five wides in an over in ODI cricket

3. Tuk Tuk Pakistan

Pakistan started the innings at a very slow pace despite a long extra-ful first over by Shami. Pakistan were 47/2 after 9.2 overs. Imam-ul-Haq, who replaced Fakhar Zaman in Pakistan squad, had a strike rate of 38.46. He scored 10 runs off 26 deliveries. His opening partner, former Pakistan captain Babar Azam, scored 23(26) and could not play up to the expectations. Surprisingly, or not so, only three sixes were hit in Pakistan’s innings.
4. Khushdil Shah takes Pakistan to respectable score
Pakistan’s number seven batter Khushdil Shah played a knock of 38 runs off 39 deliveries to help Pakistan post a total of 241. Pakistan were dismissed in the 49.4 overs. Earlier in the innings, Saud Shakeel built a partnership with captain Muhammad RIzwan, scoring 62 and 46 respectively. Kuldeep Yadav starred for India with the bowl, taking three wickets.

5. Virat Kohli Becomes Most Successful Indian Fielder

During Pakistan’s innings, former Team India captain Virat Kohli took two catches, helping his team dismiss Khushdil Shah and Naseem Shah. With the two catches, Kohli has now taken a total of 158 catches as a fielder in ODI cricket. These are the most number of catches taken by Kohli. Whose record did he break? The answer is Mohammed Azharuddin, who took 156 catches as a fielder.

6. Electrifying Hitman, Stable Shubman
Team India captain Rohit Sharma gave an electrifying start to India scoring 20 runs off 15 deliveries. He hit three fours and one six in his innings. Rohit departed in the fifth over, however, he laid the platform for Gill and Virat Kohli to build a stable partnership. Gill and Kohli stitched a 69-run partnership before Gill departed when India were 100/1. Gill scored 46 runs off 52 deliveries. Kohli stayed in the middle to find his lost form. He built a 114-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer to take India closer to victory
7. Kohli The Show Stealer
Virat Kohli stayed on the crease till the very end as he managed to break several records and finished the match with a four, also bringing up his 51st ODI hundred and 82nd international hundred. During the course of his innings, Kohli broke several records. He crossed the 14,000-run mark in ODI cricket, taking the fewest innings to breach the milestone. Kohli is now the fastest batter to score 8000, 9000, 10000, 11000, 12000, 13000 and 14000 ODI runs. Kohli has also become the third-highest run-scorer in the history of international cricket. Kohli, who scored 100*(111) also recorded his first-ever hundred in the history of Champions Trophy.
8. The Table Situation
India are placed top of the Group A points table. They are followed by New Zealand, Bangladesh and primary hosts Pakistan. India have all but reached the semi-finals. If New Zealand beat Bangladesh on Tuesday, Pakistan and Bangladesh will be knocked out of the tournament and India and New Zealand will advance to the semi-finals. To qualify fo the semi-finals, Pakistan would need Bangladesh to beat New Zealand and then they would also need to defeat Bangladesh with a big margin. After that, they’d need India to beat New Zealand. Even then, Pakistan’s qualification would depend on NRR.
Position | Team | Played | Won | Lost | N/R | Tied | Net RR | Points |
1 | India | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.647 | 4 |
2 | New Zealand | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1.2 | 2 |

9. We are making old mistakes: Rizwan
Following the match, Pakistan captain Muhammad Rizwan admitted that Pakistan are keeping on making old mistakes. He said, “”We made mistakes we’ve been making in the last few matches. These aren’t new mistakes. We’ve been making them in the last four games. We work on them, but we are humans, our players are humans, these mistakes happen.
Rizwan stated, “We’re trying to work on those, we’re trying to put the effort in to resolve those. What I believe is that India’s effort was greater than us, they were braver than us. That is why they got the result. We made mistakes, maybe because when we had to show bravery in some moments we didn’t show enough. In our fielding we needed to show more energy, but maybe we were lacking in that, and so made mistakes.”
Talking about Pakistan’s chances, he said, “We can say for now that it is over. That is the truth. We’ll see what Bangladesh does with New Zealand, then New Zealand with India and then what we do. It’s a long road and it depends on other teams.”
10. What did Virat Kohli say?
Virat Kohli, who bagged the Player of the Match award, said, “It feels to be good to bat in that manner in an important game, where a spot for semis was there to be taken, after Rohit fell. My job was clear – to control the middle overs, not take risks against spinners and take on pacers. I was happy with the template, it’s how I play in ODIs.”
He further said, “I have a decent understanding of my game. It’s about keeping the outside noise away, take care of my energy levels and thoughts. It’s easy for me to get pulled into expectations and frenzy around games like these. I kept telling myself I’ll give my 100% while fielding. It’s why I take pride in it. When you put your head down and go about your work, things work out. Clarity is important, when there is pace on the ball you have to get scoring.”
Kohli also stated, “Shubman and Shreyas have been excellent. Everyone’s got a decent knock in these conditions, that’ll augur well in the coming matches. At 36, a week off is very good. It takes a lot out of me to put in that much effort.”
